What to do if your pet is missing

There are quite a few things that you can do which may help you find your pet more quickly:
  • Even though it is a distressing time, it is important to try not to panic. Take a few minutes to double check any usual places your pet could be hiding - you would be surpised how many calls PETtrac receive from pet owners reporting their pets missing only to find them 5 minutes later in the shed or under a bed
  • Make sure that the contact details are correct on your pet's MicroChip, and report your pet missing to the microchip database
  • Notify your local dog/animal warden that your pet is missing
  • Contact rescue organisations such as RSPCA, SSPCA, Cats Protection and local rescue centres
  • Get in touch with your local vet practices in case someone has reported your pet found to them
  • Use posters and flyers within your neighbourhood, and contact neighbours who may have seen your pet

Additionally, if your dog is missing:

  • You can contact the police, especially if you suspect your dog has been stolen
  • If your dog is missing whilst out walking, talk to other dog walkers

Additionally, if your cat is missing:

  • Ask neighbours to check sheds, garages and conservatories, where your cat could be hiding
  • Try calling your cat, particularly when your cat would normally be coming home for food and listen to see if they respond to your calls

What should you do if you find a pet?

Following from the list of things that a pet owner can do to assist finding their pet, please bear this in mind as an owner may well be looking for any pet that you have found.
  • If the pet has a collar tag with contact details, try contacting them via those details as this is often the quickest and easiest method
  • Also check with neighbours, as it is very possible that the pet is missing from them - particularly if someone has moved to the area recently and the pet is in unfamiliar surroundings
  • Contact your local dog/animal warden if you have found a dog - it is a legal requirement that you do so
  • Contact rescue organisations such as RSPCA, SSPCA, Cats Protection and local rescues
  • Get in touch with any local vet practices as the owner may have reported the pet as missing - they will also be able to scan the pet for a pet microchip
